Restoration of Flitcroft’s decoration in the Great Chamber F4.

A Brief History

17C Great Chamber.

1740s Recast by Flitcroft as Drawing Room Ceiling [NRO: Drawing] Modillion cornice Chimneypiece and overmantle (overmantle painting sold  and replaced by mirror) Doorcases dado and skirting walling fabric hung between dado and cornice.

[19C survey] 19C use as Library.

1900 Cowtan Elaboration of plasterwork by London plasterers with addition of frieze below cornice, plaster ornaments and looking glasses to walls.  Sashes changed to single pane glazed with plate glass. Window F4/w1 blocked up.

1942 = Drawing Room.

Late 20C painted joinery modified as stripped pine.


What's to do

The 20C decorations and mirrors would be removed to recover Flitcroft interior all of which remains insitu, The minor losses of carved ornament on the chimneypiece and overmantle would be made following evidence of the imprint and 19C drawn record. Window F4/w1 would be reopened to serve the room. Windows F4/w2-w5 to be fitted with new subdivided sashes to match F4/w1. Full height of windows recovered. Shutters and architraves fitted matching F3/w2. Damask to be hung on walls.
